NNU studied and put into practice the guiding principles of the Fourth Plenary Session and Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Party and General Secretary Xi Jinping's statements on education and promoted the construction of the system and capacity for school governance. NNU was listed in the first-tier of Jiangsu Province's first comprehensive assessment of local colleges and universities, and NNU’s Commission for Discipline Inspection was also listed in the first-tier in the assessment conducted by the Jiangsu Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection.
NNU actively carried out the prevention and control of COVID-19 early on in the pandemic enabling us to resume classes quickly, and as a result we were awarded the national " best university in youth volunteer services in the fight against COVID-19", "the most beautiful family in the year 2020", and " best university logistics system of all universities in Jiangsu Province in the fight against COVID-19". Many teachers have been recognized for their important role in pandemic prevention and control as well.
NNU successfully applied for new scientific research project funding. 5 major projects received funding from the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education’s Philosophy and Social Science Fund; 38 were National Social Science Fund Projects, setting a record high; and 106 were National Natural and Science Foundation Projects, among those were 1 major and 3 key projects.
NNU achieved new success in undergraduate teaching. 12 courses were chosen as national first-class undergraduate courses. We also won the first prize in the special group of ideological and political theory courses in the national teaching competition for young college teachers.
NNU were proud that our students achieved excellent results in various evaluations and competitions. We had 2 honored as "National Excellent Members of the Communist Party Youth League". Others also won special awards and first prizes in a lot of competitions, such as in the National College Student Intelligent Interconnection And Innovation Competition, the GIS Application Skills Competition, the China Undergraduate Physics Tournament (CUPT), Competition on Oceanography Knowledge for National Undergraduates, China University Business Challenge (CUBC), Energy Equipment Innovative Design Competition for China Postgraduates, China Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, etc.
NNU were honored that many faculty members were selected to become members in the plans for high-end talent. 4 young and middle-aged experts were named as leading talent for the National Major Talent Program for Philosophy and Social Sciences, Top Young Talent, national candidates for the Talent Project in the New Millennium, and as national Outstanding Middle-aged Experts. One received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, and five became members of the 8th discipline appraisal group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
NNU delivered high-level results in scientific research. NNU’s Mathematics department now ranks among the top 1% in ESI as a highly cited entity, in the world. And we won 21 outstanding achievements (including 5 first prizes) in the humanities and social sciences, which were supported by the Ministry of Education, and won the Popular Reading Award and the Youth Award both for the first time. We published 3 papers as the first corresponding author in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). And we won the 1st prize of the Geographic Information Technology Progress Award from the China Association for Geographic Information System (CAGIS).
NNU made new breakthroughs in innovation. NNU launched the first batch of national pilot reform projects for training inter-disciplinary master-level senior high school teachers, with "Physics + Technical Education" and "History + Ideological and Political Theory Education" as the pilot majors. We also established the School of Computer and Electronic Information/The School of Artificial Intelligence.
NNU had better development in community service. NNU’s Science Park has been upgraded into a provincial-level one. We successively signed joint school-running agreements with Shangrao City in Jiangxi Province, Huangjiang Town in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, Binhu District in Wuxi City and Hanjiang District in Yangzhou City. The number of newly signed cooperation projects and the number of investments have hit a historical high.
NNU made new progress in international exchanges. NNU was granted 3 National Foreign Expert Programs from the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2020, and 9 provincial-level high quality courses, taught in English, for international students. We were awarded as the best partner in the China Center for International Educational Exchange Program, and the best in international student education in Jiangsu Province.
